IMO Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping (IMO CARES) Launch
In September 2021, H.E. Saleh Al Jasser Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics met with IMO Secretary General Mr. Kittack Lim and signed the IMO Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping (IMO CARES).
This was followed by the launch of the prepatory phase of the IMO Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping (IMO CARES) on April 2nd 2022 at the IMO-Singapore Future of Shipping Conference during Singapore Maritime Week 2022.The IMO CARES Foundation Project, financed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ,will undertake all the preparatory activities to develop and design the long-term global programme.
Saudi Arabia Signs MoU Ushering in Smart Ports Initiative
In line with Vision 2030, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to make advancements in logistics and transportation innovations. The latest being the launch of 5G Smart Ports which brings together resources to modernize and transform Saudi ports and to automate operations.
ShipTek International Maritime Conference and Awards Ceremony 2022
The 15th Annual Shiptek Maritime Conference which took place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from the 7th – 8th March brought together key decision makers and high-level policy leads in the maritime industry. The event focused on market trends and insight into current and future maritime affairs and was attended by Eng. Essam Al Ammari as a keynote speaker and permanent representative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the International Maritime Organisation.
IMO Election Week Coffee Break
On December 6th, on the opening day of the 32 General Assembly of the IMO the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was delighted a coffee break at the IMO headquarters in London. The event was attended by representatives from over 90 nations as well as Secretary General of the IMO, Mr. Kitack Lim.
Saudi Arabia partners with IMO to support FAL Convention
On November 28th - 30th, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in conjunction with the International Maritime Organisation supported a regional webinar promoting the ratification and the effective implementation of the FAL Convention. The convention was opened by HE. Dr Rumaih Al Rumaih, Chairman of the Saudi Transport General Authority who highlighted the Kingdom's commitment to the IMO and its projects.
Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO participates in high-level meetings at the European Commission
On 16th November, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, Eng. Essam Al Ammari participated in high-level meetings at the European Commission in Brussels. The meetings served to open dialogue in maritime affairs between the European Commission and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia especially with regards to Maritime regulations, the IMO and identifying areas for future cooperation and support.
UK Prime Minister praises Saudi Arabia’s target of Net Zero by 2060 during call with Crown Prince
On November 10, UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson spoke to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman ahead of a visit to COP26 in Glasgow. The PM praised the Kingdom’s commitment to reach net zero by 2060.
Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO participates in high-level IMO panel at COP26
On 9 November, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, Eng. Essam Al Ammari participated in a high-level panel at COP26 in Glasgow. Also in attendance were the Secretary General of the IMO, Mr. Kitack Lim, and Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, HE Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. The panel focused on the IMO’s response to decarbonisation through concerted international action and the need for decarbonisation to be addressed fairly and equitably across all member states.
Saudi Arabia supports climate commitments at the G20 Summit in Rome
On 30th and 31st October, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan attended the G20 Summit in Rome. The summit concluded with a leaders’ declaration, which set out commitments to the environment, energy and climate, and sustainability.
Middle East Green Initiative
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia spearheaded the first ever climate summit in the region on the 25th of October hosting the Middle East Green Initiative. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman welcomed world leaders and representatives from 27 countries gathered in Riyadh to discuss ambitious goals for climate action.
Saudi Arabia hosts Youth Green Summit
On Monday 25 October, in-line with the Saudi Green Initiative, Saudi Arabia hosted the Youth Green Summit. It connected young people with leaders from government and the private sector to collaborate on climate action. The Youth Green Summit acted as a platform for environmental literacy, advocacy, and policy making. Participants worked to shape the future of climate action through interactive activities and provoking discussions.
KSA Unveil Roadmap for New Era of Climate Action at Saudi Green Initiative Forum
At the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) Forum on October 23rd The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of HRH The Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, unveiled its roadmap to scale Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy capacity, reduce emissions, and invest in pioneering new green technologies. The forum was hosted in Riyadh and brought together policymakers, scientists and business leaders to launch a new era of climate action.
Saudi Arabia and Indonesia co-host Celebration of Maritime Cooperation
On October 21, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s mission to the IMO, in partnership with the Indonesian mission, co-hosted an event at the Indonesian Embassy in London. The event was attended by representatives from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states and was a display of their nations’ commitment to the IMO, its mission, and its objectives.
Saudi Arabian Minister of Transport and Logistics participates in the Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference
On October 14th, H.E. Minister of Transport and Logistics, Saleh Al Jasser participated virtually in the Second Global Sustainable Transport Conference held in Beijing, China. The conference brought together key stakeholders from Governments, UN bodies, the private sector, and civil society to discuss the importance of sustainable transport for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UK Prime Minister calls Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, discusses Climate, G20, and COP26
On October 11, 2021, UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson spoke to the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. They agreed on the importance of G20 countries making substantive progress on climate change and reducing emissions ahead of the COP26 Summit in Glasgow next month.
