Saudi Arabia Signs MoU Ushering in Smart Ports Initiative

In line with Vision 2030, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues to make advancements in logistics and transportation innovations. The latest being the launch of 5G Smart Ports which brings together resources to modernize and transform Saudi ports and to automate operations. This initiative provides additional momentum to the national objective of increasing the share of GDP of non-oil exports from 16% to 50% by 2030 especially taking into consideration that KSA ports account for more than 90% of Saudi export movement. This initiative is part of the continued priority to enhance the Kingdom’s global rating in the Logistics Performance Index and develop a more sustainable maritime sector through the adoption of cleaner and more efficient energy systems.

As part of the Smart Ports initiative, Mawani signed three MoUs with (stc), Ericsson and Huawei, the Saudi Global Ports Company (SGP), the Red Sea Gateway Terminal Company (RSGT) and DP World. The three will engage in developing and accelerating the use of 5G technology to provide automation that provides fast speeds and low latency in the logistic operations space. The agreements detail that the companies will provide IT infrastructure as well as cloud computing and cybersecurity development. The partners will collaborate on R+D and product development to create new products for operating systems and improve performance at Saudi ports.

Saudi Arabia aims to continue to develop a sustainable and prosperous maritime sector that positions KSA as a global logistics hub in line with the economic and social ambitions of the Kingdom and Vision 2030.
