The As part of the ongoing IMO CARES (Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping) Foundation Project financed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a side event took place during the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon participated in alongside the IMO, MTCC Africa and in collaboration with the Government of Kenya.a side event during the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon The event titled ‘Maritime Promoting and Strengthening Sustainable Ocean-Based Economies through Regional Cooperation on Maritime Decarbonization (Focus: Africa)’ was attended by delegates from across Africa as well as regional and technology experts and government delegates. with the IMO in collaboration with the Government of Kenya.
The workshop focused on Maritime Decarbonization Research and Development while considering Africa and Global Perspectives and how the IMO’s CARES project will besupport able to support technology transfers thebetween the global north and south, research and development as well as and acceleratinge efforts towards maritime decarbonisation.
The IMO CARESworkshop on the 29th June is part of (Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping) is a series of IMO CARES workshops in collaboration with the global MTCC network to obtain valuable information and regional perspectives for the project which focuses on expected to be a long-term programme with the objective to acceleratinge demonstrations of green technologies and their deployment globally in a manner that facilitates blue economic growth in developing regions. IMO CARES aims to coordinate and link the various global initiatives together, such as Research and Development Centres (R&D Centres), Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs), pilot technology demonstration projects as well as green financing initiatives which will accelerate the decarbonization process of the maritime sector in developing countries, especially in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) as well as maritime decarbonisation..
The event involved Kkeynote addresses made by Dr. Jose Matheickal, IMO Chief Department of Partnerships and a Projects, Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Director of the Marine Environment Division as well as a recorded video from Eng. Essam Alammari, the Permanent Representative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the IMO -Transport General Authority. This was followed by expert discussions in decarbonisation, technology requirements, industry and legislative challenges both globally and regionally and potential solutions for these issues.
