IMO CARES virtual workshop in Collaboration with MTCC Caribbean – 22nd June.

The IMO CARES (Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping) Foundation Project financed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, hosted the first virtual workshop in collaboration with the Maritime Technical Cooperation Centres across the world. This virtual workshop which took place on the 22nd June involved MTCC Caribbean and representatives from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Bahamas, Guyana, Barbados and Haiti.  MTCC Caribbean is one of five regional centres of The Global MTCC Network (GMN) for promoting technologies and operations to improve energy efficiency in the maritime sector and is headquartered at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).

The workshop focused on Maritime Decarbonization Research and Development while considering Caribbean and Global Perspectives and how the IMO’s CARES project will be able to support technology transfer the global north and south and accelerate efforts towards maritime decarbonisation.

Keynote addresses were made by Dr. Jose Matheickal, Chief Department of Partnerships and Projects of the IMO and Eng. Essam Alammari the Permanent Representative for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the IMO -Transport General Authority. This was followed by expert discussions in decarbonisation, technology requirements, industry and legislative challenges both globally and regionally and potential solutions for these issues.
