IMOCARES & MTCC Africa Mobilizing Global Support for Green Maritime Transition in Africa at COP27
IMO Department of Partnerships and Projects, in collaboration with MTCC Africa, hosted ‘Mobilizing Global Support for Green Maritime Transition in Africa’ at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh Egypt at the Africa Pavilion. The event was held in cooperation of the African Union, AUDA-NEPAD African Union Development Agency, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
The workshop focused on Maritime Decarbonization R&D Africa and Global Perspectives and heavily featured MTCC Africa, one of five regional centres of the Global MTCC Network (GMN) for promoting technologies and operations to improve energy efficiency in the maritime sector. The event prominently featured the IMO CARES (Coordinated Actions to Reduce Emissions from Shipping) Foundation Project financed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Speakers including Gyorgyi Gurban the Head of Projects Implementation of Department of Partnerships and Projects IMO, Her Excellency Ambassador Nancy Karigithu, Principal Secretary, State Department for Shipping and Maritime and Special Envoy for Maritime and Blue Economy for Kenya as well as international organisations and prominent delegates such as Alexis Grosskopf CEO of OceanHub Africa, Dr. Al-Hamdou Dorsouma Ag. Director for Climate Change & Green Growth African Development Bank, Lydia Ngugi, Head of Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre for Africa.
The workshop helped to support the development of the IMO CARES strategic framework which will be important in the implementation of a tangible mechanism to guide technology demonstrations and maritime decarbonization Research and Development while considering Africa and Global Perspectives and how the IMO’s CARES project will be able to support technology transfer the global north and south and accelerate efforts towards maritime decarbonisation.
