Vice Chairmanship of International Mobile Satellite Organisation at IMSO General Assembly 28 (24th – 28th September 2022) and IMSO Advisory committee position awarded to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is delighted to have been elected as Vice-Chair of the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) of the 28th General Assembly. This achievement reflects the Kingdom’s involvement and active participation in the organization and continued support for the organisations activities and future development.

As the international organisation that oversees maritime satellite coordination and communication services for GMDSS Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Long-Range Identification and Tracking of ships (LRIT) as well as facilitating a global network of Data Centres and multiple national and industry stakeholders, IMSO is an important organisation aiding maritime safety and security across the world which has worked closely with the IMO on these issues since its inception in 1976.

Throughout 2021 and 2022, Saudi Arabia is delighted to have supported IMSO with the creation of a capacity building project focusing on Long Range Identification and Tracking of Ships (LRIT) which is currently under implementation with IMSO. This project seek to support the integration, audit and training for specific SIDS and LDC countries and thereby support their maritime safety and security through the use of this system. Saudi Arabia is also actively engaged in expanding this initiative to support additional countries in 2022 – 2023.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was also elected to the IMSO Advisory Committee for the Asia/ Pacific Region for the 2nd time in a row and was joined by 16 countries including, Australia, Bangladesh, China, DPK Korea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Palau, Philippines, Republic of Korea, UAE, and Vanuatu.
